Kylmäpihlaja is the outermost of the large islands off Rauma. A combined lighthouse and pilot station were built there in 1952-1953. This multifunctional building replaced the Rauma lightship, which was moved off Kemi. At that time, the Kylmäpihlaja tower and wing building had facilities for a total of 12 pilots, eight cutter operators and two lighthouse keepers. The island is part of the Bothnian Sea National Park.

The sturdy square lighthouse tower rises 31 m above its foundation and 36 m above sea level. It has 12 floors and 104 steps. The range of the lighthouse’s light has been reduced from the previous 27 nautical miles to 17 nautical miles. Today, the lighthouse is used for tourism. It is owned by the City of Rauma, but an independent entrepreneur – West Coast Seaservice – operates there.
